About Me

Melissa Carvery MSW, RSW

Provisional Clinical Specialist

Who I am and How I Can Help.

My Background

Hi,  Im Melissa, I have lived, worked and raised my family in Halifax for over 20 years.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent several years working as a social worker supporting individuals and families through some of life's most challenging circumstances. This experience provided me with a deep understanding of the complex realities people face, including stress, family conflict, parenting challenges, life transitions, mental health & addiction concerns, and the impact that personal, social, and systemic factors can have on well-being.

I completed both a Bachelor of Social Work degree and a Master of Social Work degree at Dalhousie University.

I take an integrative approach to therapy, drawing from evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). This allows me to tailor therapy to your unique needs, goals, and experiences.

My Practice

My practice is rooted in trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and strengths-based approaches to counselling.

Being trauma-informed means, I recognize that life experiences can shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. Rather than asking, "What's wrong with you?" I approach counselling with curiosity and compassion, asking, "What has happened to you, and how has it impacted you?" I strive to create a safe, supportive environment where clients feel respected, empowered, and in control of their healing journey.

Being culturally sensitive means I recognize and respect the unique experiences, identities, values, and backgrounds that each person brings to therapy. Factors such as culture, race, ethnicity, family traditions, gender, socioeconomic status, and lived experiences can influence how we understand ourselves and navigate challenges. I am committed to providing a space where clients feel safe, seen, heard, and understood without judgment.

A strengths-based approach means I believe every person has resilience, abilities, and inner resources, even during times when they may feel overwhelmed or stuck. Rather than focusing solely on problems, we work together to identify and build upon your existing strengths, helping you develop confidence, create meaningful change, and move toward the life you want to live.
